Elizabeth (Luke 1)

I am Elizabeth. My name means ‘God is my vow’
My husband, Zechariah and I had always wanted to have a child. We prayed constantly for one (Luke 1:13) and it was expected of us that we would have one. (Luke 1:25. Years of waiting slowly eroded our hopes for a child. Now we were old…………..it wasn’t possible, was it?
I was at home and Zechariah was on duty in the temple at Jerusalem when an angel brought Zechariah the news that we would have a child (Luke 1:13-18). Zechariah couldn’t believe it. Do you blame him? The angel told him, because of his lack of belief; he would be dumb from that moment until the time came for the baby to be born. When he came home and signed to me the whole story, I could only trust and hope………….

Nine months later, our son was born. The relatives wanted the baby named after Zechariah or another family member and signed such to Zechariah, but for the first time in all those months Zechariah spoke to say, “His name is John”.
If I had ‘given up’ on God because of my barrenness, I might have forfeited my God-given role of bringing up John who would later become known as, the Baptist. All mothers are blessed with the privilege of raising young children and it is a very important ministry but God trusted me and gave me ‘his John’ to raise and to teach. It just shows that age is no hindrance to ministry or to God’s blessing.
